The Book of Clarence is finally heading to UK cinemas after being suddenly pulled from theatres ahead of its original opening date.

Premiered at BFI London Film Festival last October, the biblical comedy starring LaKeith Stanfield in the role of Clarence will now hit theatres on April 19 — three months after its previous UK release date of January 19.

Already out in cinemas in the US, the film written and directed by Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) and co-produced by Jay-Z tells the story of down-on-his-luck Clarence in 29 AD Jerusalem. Overwhelmed by debt, Clarence tries to improve his situation by convincing people he's the new Messiah.

"Captivated by the power and glory of the rising Messiah, he risks everything to carve his own path to a divine life, ultimately discovering that the redemptive power of belief may be his only way out," the synopsis reads.

Alongside leading man Stanfield, the cast for the film includes Lupin's Omar Sy, Coming 2 America's Teyana Taylor, and Scream: Resurrection's RJ Cyler.

James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anna Diop, Micheal Ward, Tom Glynn-Carney, Stranger Things' Caleb McLaughlin, Alfre Woodard and David Oyelowo also star.

Speaking about the film last September, Samuel explained how he wanted to create a Bible story with an ordinary protagonist.

"I wanted to tell a Bible story about an everyman. I always wanted to explore the Bible stories, but from the angle of the person that sells Jesus his sandals, the woman or man that owns the hair salon," the filmmaker told Vanity Fair at the time.

"Clarence is a person that doesn't believe in anything outside of what's in front of him, what he can see and hear."

The Book of Clarence is released in UK cinemas on April 19.
