Borderlands first reactions land ahead of cinema release
Borderlands' first reactions have landed, with critics almost unanimously panning the star-studded video game adaptation.
Following the Borderlands premiere in LA on August 6, viewers took to social media to share their cold impressions on Eli Roth's action comedy.
The movie from the shooter video game of the same name failed to impress critics, who called it "baffling" and "uninspired" whilst praising its central performances, particularly from Cate Blanchett, Jack Black and Ariana Greenblatt.

Borderlands "is a baffling video game adaptation," writes Darren Movie Reviews, who brands the film "not bad, but utterly forgettable".
"There is potential for great world building, but it never happens due to a rushed and dull screenplay; the set design is impressive but the film looks cheap due to poor CGI," the review continues.
"Cate Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt and Jack Black are all great, even if their characters are underdeveloped and the majority of the jokes fall flat; and while the video game carries a M rating, the film carries a PG-13 rating and you can tell it forced Eli Roth into an uncomfortable space as he tried to create a fun and bizarre space adventure."
"I can tell you I've seen Borderlands now and that it's really bad," critic Matthew Simpson shares. "I really wanted to like it, but an uninspired plot and several phoned in performances, plus being stuck in a weird place where it looks both expensive and cheap at the same time make it a huge misfire."

Kurt Morrison dismisses the adaptation as "predictable", stating: "As predictable as films come these days, Borderlands is borderline unwatchable. With such great talent in front and behind the camera, it's astonishing to me that this ended up being the finished product.
"Blanchett and Hart are having a lot of fun here and save this from being a trainwreck. Geared to be a franchise starter, it'll be a big surprise if this film finds an audience.
The film stars Blanchett as protagonist Lilith, an outlaw who returns to her home planet of Pandora and teams up with a bunch of misfits to find the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe, Atlas.
Rounding out the cast are Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramírez, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Borderlands releases in cinemas on August 9.
