The first reviews for Borderlands have arrived, but the critics aren't impressed.

Based on the award-winning video game of the same name, the Eli Roth-directed film stars Cate Blanchett as Lilith, an infamous bounty hunter who reluctantly returns to her home planet Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas, Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt).

Lilith forms an unlikely alliance with a team of ragtag of misfits along the way, including former elite mercenary Roland (Kevin Hart), Tina's protector Krieg (Florian Munteanu), oddball scientist Patricia Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), and wiseass robot Claptrap (Jack Black).

Despite its all-star cast, Borderlands has failed to impress critics, landing a dismal score of just 7% from 55 reviews on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.

While this score could change as more reviews roll in, the general consensus so far is that Borderlands is a "bland" adaptation with one-dimensional characters and a "wasted" cast.

Here's a round-up of what reviewers have been saying:

Digital Spy

"The problem with Borderlands is that although it's an incredibly faithful adaptation visually, with fun needle drops and a megawatt comedic cast, it just isn't funny enough, it isn't zany enough, and it isn't even particularly violent enough. It's somehow bland."

Rolling Stone

"Borderlands doesn’t just suffer from the usual slings and arrows of moving something stupendously successful in one medium to another, and praying that most of the beloved, vital elements don’t get lost in translation. It is, in no uncertain terms, a horrendous waste of time, talent, and pixels."

Empire

"A botched Guardians wannabe that isn’t half as fun as you’d hope from the punky sci-fi promise of its video-game source material and the presence of Blanchett at the top of the cast list."

Variety

"Since gamers no doubt have their favourites from among this crew, the movie tries to give each of the leads a heroic battle against a more powerful adversary — or in Roland’s case, a small army of them. But as the film goes on, it’s increasingly clear where things are headed. By the time Borderlands unlocks its vault, not even the characters seem to care what’s inside."

The Hollywood Reporter

"It’s conceivable that long-time fans of the video game might get more out of Borderlands, but I wouldn’t count on it. At one point, Claptrap returns to operational mode after a heavy-weaponry assault and says, 'I blacked out. Did something important happen?' Not in this movie."
