A Tory MP has compared Boris Johnson to Alexander the Great for delivering Brexit.

In an extraordinary House of Commons speech, Sir Bill Cash hailed the prime minister for “saving our democracy”.

It came during a special debate organised to rush Johnson’s post-Brexit EU trade deal through Parliament before the “transition period” ends on Thursday.

In his gushing speech, Brexiteer Cash paid tribute to Leave voters in the 2016 referendum and Conservative voters in last year’s general election, before moving on to Johnson.

It’s the PM, Cash said, “who against all the odds led us out of parliamentary paralysis last year to victory, delivering us from 48 years of subjugation to EU laws and European court jurisdiction and regaining our sovereignty.

“Our PM, like his hero Pericles, is the first citizen of this country, and like him has saved our democracy. Like Alexander the Great, Boris has cut the Gordian knot.

“Churchill and Margaret Thatcher would have been deeply proud of his achievements, and so are we!”

Elsewhere, fellow Brexiteer Conservative MP Mark Francois said Brexit turmoil over the last half decade was “always worth the fight”.

Francois said: “What I call the ‘battle for Brexit’ is now over, we won. But I suspect the battle for the union is now about to begin.”

Meanwhile, Social Democratic and Labour Party MP Colum Eastwood warned the “United Kingdom is coming to an end” as he said he would vote against the deal.

“It places a solemn responsibility on us to manage the relationships across these islands. Our scarred history places a moral duty on us.”

Johnson’s bill is expected to pass comfortably in the Commons and Lords, before getting Royal Assent to become law on Wednesday evening.
