A mother revealed that her eight-year-old boy was sent from home from hospital twice before later dying of Strep A.

Sajida Jabeen claimed that doctors initially gave Mohammad Izaan Danish doses of ibuprofen and a nebuliser before realising the severity of his condition two days later.

The mum-of-three said she waited for six hours on two separate occasions at Bradford Royal Infirmary while pleading with doctors to take his symptoms seriously.

On their second visit, she said that her son was forced to sit on the hospital floor while suffering severe chest pains as there were no chairs left.

Ms Jabeen said that the true extent of Mohammad’s illness was only noted at a GP appointment, who told her to immediately take her son back to the hospital for treatment.

However, more than three weeks later, he succumbed to the infection that has so far claimed the lives of about 30 children in the UK this winter.

Ms Jabeen said she was “angry” that doctors had not realised the severity of his condition sooner.

The hospital trust confirmed it would launch a “thorough investigation” into his death.

Ms Jabeen, a full-time mother from Bradford, West Yorkshire, said that Mohammad had begun to feel unwell around Dec 9 2022, suffering from a cough and a temperature.

She decided to take him to Bradford Royal Infirmary’s A&E department the following evening as she worried about his worsening symptoms.

She claimed that doctors simply gave him medicine before telling her it was fine for him to go home after waiting nearly six hours for assistance.

Ms Jabeen said they received the same treatment when she took Mohammad back to the hospital on Dec 11, even as he experienced chest pains.

She then visited her local GP, who she claimed was shocked at the little boy’s health and told her to go back to the hospital immediately.

Mohammad was admitted to hospital on Dec 12, before he was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary the following day.

On Jan 6, he passed away from pneumonia Strep A.

Ms Jabeen described her son as a “happy smiling” boy who liked playing football and going to school with his friends.

Dr Ray Smith, the chief medical officer for the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I would like to send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Izaan’s parents on the tragic death of their son. I will conduct a thorough investigation and the findings will be shared with Izaan’s parents once completed.”
