‘Boyhood,’ ‘Birdman’ Top Alliance of Women Film Journalists Awards

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has awarded its Eda best film honor to “Boyhood,” with Richard Linklater winning best director. “Birdman” won best original screenplay, while “Gone Girl” took the adapted screenplay honor.

Voted on by film critics and writers, AWFJ’s annual awards include a number of offbeat categories: Scarlett Johansson won the best depiction of nudity, sexuality or seduction for “Under the Skin,” while Swinton took a second award for the actress who defies age and ageism. Cameron Diaz was named the actress most in need of a new agent for her role in “Sex Tape,” while “Inherent Vice” was voted the movie the members most wanted to love, but couldn’t.

The award for “most egregious age difference between the leading man and the love interest” went to Woody Allen’s “Magic in the Moonlight,” starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone, with a 28-year age difference.

Laura Poitras’ “Citizenfour” won best documentary, and best animated movie went to “The Lego Movie.” Actress awards went to Julianne Moore for “Still Alice” and Tilda Swinton for “Snowpiercer” for supporting, while Michael Keaton won best actor for “Birdman” and J.K. Simmons took supporting for “Whiplash.” The best ensemble cast award was a tie between “Birdman” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

The organization’s Female Focus awards went to “Selma’s” Ava DuVernay for best woman director and Gillian Flynn of “Gone Girl” for woman screenwriter. Emily Blunt was named best female action star for “Edge of Tomorrow,” while Gugu Mbatha-Raw won best breakthrough performance for “Belle.” DuVernay and Poitras tied for the Female Icon of the Year honors.

Other awards included “Ida” for non-English language film and “Birdman” for cinematograhy, score and editing.
