The Boys star Karl Urban is entering the deadly tournament in Mortal Kombat 2.

The New Zealander is in final talks to join the live-action video game adaptation as classic character Johnny Cage — a Hollywood action star with an uppercut as dangerous as his ego (via TheWrap).

The ending of the first Mortal Kombat movie set the stage for Cage to appear in the sequel by having lead character Cole (Lewis Tan) leaving Outworld for Los Angeles to find the actor.

Cage is one of the most important heroes of the Mortal Kombat games, and has a long-running romance with special forces soldier Sonya Blade — played by Home and Away's Jessica McNamee in the 2021 movie.

In the games, the couple eventually become parents to daughter Cassie Cage — a skilled fighter in her own right when she features in the later sequel games.

Fans had rallied for Ryan Reynolds to take on the role of Johnny Cage when the first film was released, giving the Deadpool actor a perfect opportunity to spoof fan-casting rumours.

Urban is no stranger to franchise roles, having played comic book hero Judge Dredd in 2012's Dredd film as well as the villain Skurge in Thor: Ragnarok.

The actor has also played Dr Leonard 'Bones' McCoy in the rebooted Star Trek film universe, and currently destroys superheroes as Billy Butcher in The Boys.

Mortal Kombat 2 will bring back director Simon McQuoid, with Moon Knight and The Umbrella Academy's Jeremy Slater on board to write the script.

Lewis Tan is expected to return as the original character Cole Young and is likely to incorporate more fighters from the Mortal Kombat sequel games, such as Sindel, Shao Kahn and Kitana.

No release date has been announced for Mortal Kombat 2.
