The worlds of Hollywood and royalty united at the BAFTA Awards.

Prince William and Kate Middleton mingled with celebrities during Sunday night’s British Academy Film and Television Awards (the British equivalent of the Oscars), meeting winners and nominees behind the scenes after the show.

William excitedly greeted A Star Is Born‘s Bradley Cooper, who took home the prize for Original Music.

“Congratulations, great film,” William told the actor and director, adding, “I didn’t know you could sing!”

Cooper quipped, “I didn’t either,” gaining a laugh from the 36-year-old royal.

William also praised the “amazing” performance of Lady Gaga – who spent Sunday night at the Grammys – in the film, to the agreement of the actor.

“Did you always have her in mind when you wanted to do this?” the prince asked.

“Not originally,” Cooper shared. “But then it was dormant for a while, and I saw her perform and that was it.”

William replied, “That’s a really amazing story.”

Kate also shared an exciting moment with Olivia Colman, who won the night’s Best Actress award for her portrayal of Queen Anne in The Favourite. In addition, Colman will play Prince William’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth II in seasons 3 and 4 of Netflix’s The Crown.

Both women greeted each other with giant smiles on their faces, sharing a handshake behind the scenes at Royal Albert Hall. The two women were all smiles as they chatted with each other.

Colman tells PEOPLE that Kate and William were “absolutely lovely” and “absolutely wonderful” – and told her that they enjoyed watching The Favourite.

Although the actress told PEOPLE she “completely forgot to read the first page of my speech,” she was ready to celebrate.

“All I want to do now is have fun, have some food and have a few drinks. Just enjoy the moment,” she said.

William, 36, and Kate, 37, also got a chance to congratulate Colman’s costar Rachel Weisz, who won Best Supporting Actress for her role as the Duchess of Marlborough. The film, who went into the awards show with a commanding 12 nominations, also snagged the Outstanding British Film award – but fell short to Roma in the Best Film category.

For the event, Kate wore a white asymmetrical Alexander McQueen dress with floral embellishments on her left shoulder. She paired the elegant gown with a white clutch, a diamond bracelet and a pair of her late mother-in-law Princess Diana’s pearl and silver earrings. Diana wore the earrings in 1995 while accepting the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the United Celebral Palsy Foundation.
