Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito has said that being cast in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film is “the next step” for him.

The actor played the villainous meth baron and fried chicken restaurateur Gus Fring in the acclaimed AMC crime series, reprising the role for its ongoing prequel, Better Call Saul.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Esposito said: “Well there’s been all these rumours about being with Marvel - I want to work with those guys. I put it out there all the time.

“I haven’t created any of those rumours, but I worked years ago with Louis D’Esposito, who’s one of the guys at Marvel, back when he was doing Cotton Club and I was doing Cotton Club, he was the First AD. What they do is fantastic, and I want to do something enduring with them… I think the Marvel world would be, likely, the next step for me…”

While Esposito enjoyed a variety of roles early in his career, including as a police detective in Homicide: Life on the Street and as a fast-talking youth in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, the success of Breaking Bad has meant he is now often typecast as villains.

Although he didn’t confirm which roles he would be pursuing in the hit superhero film franchise, it seems probable that Esposito would play a supervillain.

Last weekend, it was revealed that the actor would be appearing extensively in the upcoming video game Far Cry 6, playing the leader of a country loosely based on Cuba.

Images of the game featuring Esposito’s likeness were leaked online last Friday. His role in the game was then confirmed in a trailer which premiered during Sunday’s Ubisoft Forward event.
