Bridgerton's Regé-Jean Page is already being tipped as the next James Bond after his suave and enigmatic performance as the Duke of Hastings in Netflix's hit period drama.

The actor joins a long list of rumoured TV and film stars linked to take over as Bond when Daniel Craig steps down after No Time To Die.

And now Bridgerton director Julie Anne Robinson has added fuel to the rumours, as she's now backing the 31-year-old star for the iconic 007 role...

"It's interesting about Regé, I hope he is not offended by this but I never saw him as a sex symbol," Julie told Deadline. "I always saw him as a serious actor, very committed, a caring professional.

"And now look at him, I mean, goodness me. It’s incredible, I hope he is the next James Bond."

Regé-Jean has also responded to the rumours during his recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, explaining: "I think the internet thinks a lot of things and that's one of the more pleasant ones. So I'm pleased as far as that goes.

"I think there might be an element of cultural translation to be done here. If you're a Brit, and you do something of any kind of renown that people regard well, then people start saying the 'B' word. It's like a merit badge. You get the 'B' word merit badge. But I don't think it's much more than that.

"I'm very, very glad to have the badge. I'm glad to be in such wonderful company of people who have the badge. But it's a badge."

Bridgerton is on course to become Netflix's fifth biggest original series launched to date as it is projected to reach 63 million households within its first four weeks of release.

Bridgerton season 1 is now available to watch on Netflix.
