Brits have been told to prepare for "turbulent" weather as heavy showers and strong winds are due to sweep across the country.

Warmer spots in the south east of England saw highs of 21C on Tuesday but the sunshine is due to give way for more unsettled weather for the rest of this week.

A severe weather warning for downpours is set to come into force, with the possibility of some localised flooding in the wettest locations.

Met Office meteorologist Steven Keates told the Evening Standard: "We're entering a much more unsettled and turbulent spell of weather with many places seeing heavy rain and also some strong winds as well.

"On Wednesday morning, particularly in eastern areas of the UK, it will start off fine and dry.

"It might be a touch on the chilly side, as further west we've already got cloud and some heavy rain coming in from the Atlantic."

It will be mostly clear in Northern Ireland on Wednesday, but Scotland and areas of south west England are due to see some showers, said the meteorologist.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for rain across south west Scotland for the morning as the wettest spots might see a couple of inches of rain which could cause some localised flooding.

"Through the day tomorrow, a band of rain will be working its way further east and by dusk it will reach East Anglia and the far south east of England," said Mr Keates.

Temperatures are set to reach highs of 16C to 17C in the south east on Wednesday.

The rain is then set to clear out into the north sea by the evening, but it will linger across the north east of Scotland.

Mr Keates added: "Things turn more unsettled still as we move through Friday into the weekend. We've got a very strong jet stream coming across the Atlantic coming our way.

"We're going to see quite a deep area of low pressure developing on Friday in the south of the UK, which means we will see increasingly strong winds across the southern half of the UK and in south Wales.

"Through the weekend that area of low pressure will spiral and meander its way around the UK. But all parts of the UK will be at risk of seeing strong winds and heavy rain."
