Brits dominate at the Golden Globes

It was a big night for the Brits in Tinseltown last night as homegrown stars and television shows dominated the 2017 Golden Globes.

Glitzy Ryan Gosling-Emma Stone musical ‘La La Land’ claimed the lion’s share of the movies section winning a record 7 awards, but there was still space for British stars to shine. Here’s which Brits won what at the 2017 Golden Globes.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson – Best supporting actor for ‘Nocturnal Animals’

The 26-year-old Brit was the outsider’s choice to win in this hotly contested category where he faced stiff opposition from Jeff Bridges and Mahershala Ali. He was gracious in victory though, thanking his director Tom Ford for the opportunity before he paid tribute to his ‘soulmate’, wife Sam Taylor-Johnson, and their four “beautiful daughters”.

‘The Crown’ – Best series Drama

If you ever needed a reminder of Britain’s “special relationship” with Hollywood, look no further than Netflix’s Royal biopic scooping top honours in this category. ‘The Crown’, a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Netflix, beat the buzzy types of ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Westworld’, ‘This Is Us’, and ‘Stranger Things’ to be named Best Drama series.

The 32-year-old Stockport-born star is no stranger to playing royals having memorably portrayed Anne Boleyn in ‘Wolf Hall’, but bringing our reigning monarch Elizabeth II to life for Netflix has proved to be the role of a lifetime. Foy’s name is now firmly on the map thanks to this landmark Globes win.

Tom Hiddleston in ‘The Night Manager’ – Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film – Actor


The Royal family admitted they were fans of ‘The Night Manager’ when The Duchess of Cornwall told Tom Hiddleston she and Charles had been watching the Beeb’s big budget John Le Carre adaptation every Sunday night. Hiddleston took the opportunity during his speech to promote his work as a UNICEF ambassador in Sudan.

Hugh Laurie in ‘The Night Manager’ – Best Supporting Performance in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film – Supporting Actor


It was a delight to see nice guy Hugh Laurie playing the villain in ‘The Night Manager’, and even more delightful to see him pick up a Golden Globe for his efforts. Laurie used his speech to take a pop at in the impending Trump administration joking “I won at the last ever Golden Globes”.

Olivia Colman in ‘The Night Manager’ – Best Supporting Performance in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film – Supporting Actress

Colman’s win for her role as dogged secret service agent Angela Burr completed the hat-trick of awards for ‘The Night Manager’. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kristen Bell collected the award on Colman’s behalf as she was unable to attend.
