Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain is getting the stage adaptation treatment in an upcoming West End play.

The moving love story between cowboys Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, played by late star Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, will be adapted with West Side Story actor Mike Faist and Boy Erased's Lucas Hedges in the lead roles.

Set to debut at London's theatre @sohoplace next May for a limited run, Brokeback Mountain is directed by Jonathan Butterell.

Faist, known for playing Jets leader Riff in Steven Spielberg's musical, will portray Jack, while Hedges is playing the emotionally closed-off Ennis.

An adaptation of a short story by Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain kicks off in 1963 Wyoming with Jack and Ennis being hired to herd sheep through the summer.

An emotional and sexual relationship develops between them, with Jack insisting he and Ennis should be together while the latter is hesitant, wrestling with his internalised homophobia.

Lee's movie premiered in 2005 at Venice International Film Festival, proving to be a commercial success during its theatrical run later that year.

It received several accolades, including three Academy Awards for Best Director to Lee, Best Adapted Screenplay to Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana and Best Original Score to Gustavo Santaolalla. Gyllenhaal and Ledger were nominated in acting categories, with Michelle Williams receiving a nod for the role of Ennis's wife Alma Beers del Mar.

The movie also stars Anne Hathaway as rodeo rider and Jack's wife Lureen Newsome Twist, as well as Dead To Me's Linda Cardellini, Friends' Anna Faris, Pose's Kate Mara and Stranger Things' David Harbour in supporting roles.

Brokeback Mountain opens @sohoplace on May 10.
