Bruce Willis To Star In Death Wish Remake

One of the most notorious films of the 1970s is getting the reboot treatment, with an enduring action star in the lead.

Bruce Willis is to fill Charles Bronson’s shoes in a new take on ‘Death Wish,’ originally shot in 1974 by director Michael Winner, Deadline report.

The controversial crime drama, based on a novel by Brian Garfield, centres on Paul Kersey, an initially pacifistic middle-aged architect whose world is turned upside down when a gang of thugs murder his wife and rape his daughter.

When the police fail to bring those responsible to justice, Kersey puts his peaceful principles to one side, gets a gun, and turns vigilante on the streets of New York.

Bronson returned for four ‘Death Wish’ sequels in the 1980s and 90s, all of which completely ignored the more thoughtful elements of the original in favour of relentless, progressively more ridiculous violence.

However, there is cause to believe this new ‘Death Wish’ will be more in line with the gritty, grounded tone of the original, as Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado - Israeli directorial duo behind acclaimed revenge thriller ‘Big Bad Wolves’ - have been hired to direct the film.

A new ‘Death Wish’ has been in the works for some time. Joe Carnahan was initially lined up to write and direct, and Sylvester Stallone had at one point been linked to star.

Carnahan’s screenplay, said to stay close to Brian Garfield’s novel, has subsequently been rewritten by Dan Gilroy and Graham Yost. Paramount and MGM will co-produce the film.
