The upcoming non-biopic film about Elton John's earlier years, Rocketman, has landed another big star name as Bryce Dallas Howard has signed up to play John's mother Sheila.

Variety has announced that the actress, who is currently starring in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom as dinosaur park operations manager Claire Dearing, will be playing mum to Taron Egerton, who's starring as John in the movie.

Rocketman will take aspects and songs from the iconic musician's life to chart his rise to stardom and his recovery from drug and alcohol addiction in the 1990s.

Star Egerton has pointed out that the film is not technically a biopic, saying: "We are making a movie called Rocketman about Elton John's formative years. Everyone thinks it's a biopic. It isn't.

"It's a fantasy musical so it's actually his songs used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments. He's not the only character that sings. It's going to be fun."

Rocketman's cast also features Filth and Fantastic Four star Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin and Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden as music manager John Reid.

Dexter Fletcher, who directed Egerton in 2016's Eddie the Eagle, will be helming the film, which is due for release on May 17, 2019.

Egerton recently teased us all with a cryptic first look at the project by tweeting a photo of his silhouette wearing some impressive wings, captioned: "Here we go."
