Cannes: 2014 Directors’ Fortnight Lineup Unveiled; ‘Whiplash’, ‘Cold In July’, ‘Catch Me Daddy’, ‘Pride’, John Boorman & More

UPDATE, 3:45 AM PT, WRITETHRU: The 19 features that will make up what looks like a particularly strong Directors’ Fortnight sidebar at the Cannes Film Festival were revealed this morning in Paris with a hefty dose of genre in the mix. Along with a special 4K restoration of Tobe Hooper’s classic 1974 frightfest The Texas Chain Saw Massacre comes Alleluia, a psychological horror pic from Belgium’s Fabrice Du Welz that’s inspired by the 1940s serial murdering Lonely Hearts Killers. Also on the roster are Australian helmer Zach Hilditch’s thriller These Final Hours with Jessica De Gouw (Dracula, Arrow); and Jim Mickle‘s Sundance pic Cold In July with Michael C. Hall as a small town Texas man who kills a home intruder and finds his life unraveling into a dark underworld of corruption and violence. This is the second year in a row that Mickle is appearing in the Fortnight following a bow in Sundance. Also out of Park City is Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, the Grand Jury prize-winner spearheaded by producers Jason Blum and Jason Reitman. Daniel Wolfe’s buzzed about UK thriller Catch Me Daddy is making its world premiere in the Fortnight (he directed the video for The Shoes’ Time To Dance which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and became a YouTube hit). Other British helmers inlcude veteran John Boorman with Korean War drama Queen And Country, and Matthew Warchus, whose Pride is the closing film. Pride, from Pathé, is based on a true story of gay and lesbian activists who attempted to raise money in support of the families of the striking miners in 1984 England. Bill Nighy, Dominic West, Andrew Scott, George MacKay, Paddy Considine and Imelda Staunton star. Veteran American documentarian Frederick Wiseman has a berth with National Gallery, a portrait of the day-to-day operations of the London museum.

France’s Céline Sciamma is opening the section with Bande De Filles. Sciamma, whose films center on the coming-of-age of young women, was a 2007 Un Certain Regard breakout with Water Lillies. Israel is well-repped with two dramas, Next To Her by Asaf Korman and Gett — The Trial Of Viviane Amsalem by Ronit and Shlomi Elkabetz. There are also two Asian pics in the bunch: Kaguya-Hime No Monogatari by Isao Takahata and A Hard Day, from Seong-Hun Kim.

The Fortnight was created by the French Directors’ Guild in the wake of the events of May 1968, and aims to aid in the discovery of new filmmakers. Among those whose first films have been showcased in the Fortnight (aka La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) are such directors as Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Jim Jarmusch, Michael Haneke, Chantal Akerman, Spike Lee, Sofia Coppola, and 2014 Competition helmers the Dardenne brothers and Ken Loach. The section is actually non-competitive, but certain partners of the French Directors’ Guild (La Société des Réalisateurs Français) attribute awards. It’s also one of the rare aspects of Cannes that is open to the public. The Fortnight runs from May 15-25. Here’s the 2014 roster:
