Cannes: Berlin Film Fest Hit ‘Prince’ Set for August Release

FilmBuff and Vice Media have set an August 14 release for Sam de Jong’s “Prince” in North American theaters and VOD platforms.

The Dutch coming-of-age film received an honorary mention at Berlin for the Crystal Bear for best first feature after debuting in the Generation 14 Plus section of the Berlinale.

Produced by 100% Halal, “Prince” follows a 17-year-old (played by Ayoub Elsari) on his journey into manhood while vying for the love of the neighborhood beauty and the respect of the local tough-guy gang. It’s the feature directorial debut for Dutch music video director de Jong.

FilmBuff and Vice previously worked together to release “All This Mayhem” in 2014. The film was shot a mile away from where de Jong grew up.

“For the project to cross borders and travel the world is a dream come true,” he said. “I hope U.S audiences learn something about urban Dutch life and struggles and additionally discover that we are all struggling with the same issues in the Western world.”

Producers are Gijs Kerbosch, Roel Oude Nijhuis, and Gijs Determeijer of 100% Halal and Vice Media. The deal was negotiated by Sam Scupp of FilmBuff and Charlotte Mickie of Mongrel International on behalf of the filmmakers.
