Cannes: Un Certain Regard Winner ‘Rams’ Sells to Further Territories (EXCLUSIVE)

LONDON — Jan Naszewski’s Warsaw-based sales outlet New Europe Film Sales has closed further distribution deals on Grimur Hakonarson’s Icelandic drama “Rams” (Hrutar), which won top prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section. A U.S. deal is under negotiation.

The latest buyers to pick up the film include U.K. (Soda), Spain (Karma), Italy (Bim), Hungary (Mozinet) and Middle East (Moving Turtle). Previously announced deals include Benelux (Imagine), Greece (Ama Films), Taiwan (Maison Motion), France (ARP Selection), Germany and Austria (Arsenal), Switzerland (Xenix), Norway (Arthaus), Australia (Palace), ex-Yugoslavia (Demiurg), Turkey (Filmarti), Scandinavia (Scanbox) and Japan (Gaga).

The story is about two brothers from a remote Icelandic farming valley who haven’t spoken in 40 years, but have to come together in order to save what’s dearest to them — their prize-winning flock of sheep.

Hakonarson’s short film “Slavek the Shit” previously screened in Cannes’ Cinefondation. “Rams’” director of photography, Sturla Brandth Grovlen, recently won a Silver Bear for outstanding artistic contribution at the Berlin Film Festival for the film “Victoria.”
