Already one of the most talked-about horror movies at the 2016 film festivals, cinema audiences will soon get the chance to experience ‘Raw.’

The debut film of French writer-director Julia Ducournau, ‘Raw’ is already notorious for reportedly causing audience members to pass out at its Toronto International Film Festival screening; however, it was also awarded the FIPRESCI Critics’ Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, so we can surmise there’s a lot more to the film than gross-out gore. This new trailer released by US distributors Focus World would seem to support this.

Watch the trailer below: please note it is NSFW and should not be viewed by minors.

Garance Marillier takes the lead as Justine, a young vet-in-training and vegetarian whose temperament takes a rather eye-opening change when she is force-fed raw meat as part of a college hazing ritual – which, from the look of things above, also has a bit of a ‘Carrie’ element about it.

This taste of flesh and blood awakens new urges in Justine, and with the encouragement of her sister Alexia (Ella Rumpf), the former vegetarian soon finds herself driven to satiate a hunger which is not only carnal, but cannibal.

We can expect gore, then, but a lot more besides if the critics are to be believed. Sight & Sound’s Chloe Riddick praised it as a “heady, blood-soaked examination of femininity, sexual awakening and the sisterly bond,” while Shelagh Rowan-Legg of Screen Anarchy hails writer-director Ducournau as “someone who understands deeply the audacity and vulnerability of youth,” and calls ‘Raw’ an “allegory of the discovery of identity, shifting sexuality, the sexual power of women, and the first steps into adulthood.”

After opening in US cinemas in March, Universal confirmed today on Twitter that they will release ‘Raw’ to UK cinemas in April, although the exact date is not yet confirmed:
