According to Variety, the studio recently acquired the rights to the movie, and has got helmsman Etan Cohen in place to write and direct.

To a certain generation, the 'Cannonball Run’ movies were beloved for their screwball antics, gleaming 80s sports cars and all-star casts.

They starred Burt Reynolds as JJ McClure, who with his driving partner Victor (Dom DeLuise) and a host of others take part in an illegals cross-country car race.

In the first movie, released in 1981, Reynolds and DeLuise were joined by the likes of Farah Fawcett, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Jackie Chan, Michael Hui, former NFL quarterback Terry Bradshaw, and Roger Moore, with Tara Buckman and Adrienne Barbeau as the spandex-clad, Lamborghini-driving Jill and Marcie.

It was a smash at the box office, and an even more star-studded sequel followed, featuring many of the original cast plus Telly Savalas, Ricardo Montalban, Shirley MacLaine, Sid Caesar, Abe Vigoda, Catherine Bach and Frank Sinatra, in his last ever movie appearance.

The sequel bombed, however, but a third movie, 'Speed Zone’ (also known as 'Cannonball Fever’) took on the mantle with a new cast featuring Eugene Levy and John Candy arriving in 1989.

That bombed too.

Cohen, who is helming the reboot, directed the critically hammered flop 'Get Hard’, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, last year, his first turn behind the camera after writing scripts for movies including 'Tropic Thunder’ and 'Men In Black 3’.

No word yet on which stars might be revving their engines for the new movie.
