Captain America Civil War: Robert Downey Jr Agrees 'Wholeheartedly’ With Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr has been discussing his role in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ as part of Entertainment Weekly’s ongoing coverage of Marvel’s next major film.

The actor reprises his role as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, who in the new film clashes with Chris Evans’ Cap over a superhero registration act.

Cap rallies against the call for greater accountability for superheroes, fearing what it may lead to, but Tony supports it - and with good reason. So is he really the film’s villain?

“I’ve always thought of it in some ways that Tony is the antagonist to himself in his own story, so this isn’t a problem,“ Downey Jr told EW. "This guy understands problems ‘cause he is a problem. And he tends to create problems.

"I wholeheartedly agree with what he does in this. Which is, by the way, more than I could say for some of the other movies.”

Tony’s decision is born out of his guilt over the events of 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’ - in which he created the titular villain who nearly destroyed all life on Earth. He’s also, as the actor says, been culpable for a lot of other bad things over the years.

'Civil War’ adorns the cover of the latest issue of EW, so coverage will be rolling out throughout the week. We’ve already had a closer look a Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and a few new glimpses at the film, including the shot above.

The first trailer for the film was released last week, winning over fans instantly. The highlight of the trailer was an exchange of dialogue conveying that ultimately Iron Man and Captain America are friends. At least, they were.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ is set for release on 29 April 2016.
