'Captain America' Victorious For The Third Time At The Box Office

'Captain America' Victorious For The Third Time At The Box Office

Newcomers stood no chance against previous released Captain America and Rio 2.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier proved it's staying potential by securing the top spot in the weekend box office for a third time, beating its cinematic opponents to a pulp.

Cap managed to rake in $26.6 million, bringing its domestic gross to over $201 million. Overseas, the movie has made a staggering $385.1 million, bringing its worldwide gross to $586.6 million. That is some real money.

Rio 2, the family-friendly film about singing birds, stayed strong against new competitors and remained in second place with $22.5 million.

However, the faith-based film Heaven Is For Real, adapted from a book of the same name, had a massively strong showing. Despite coming in third, it scored $21.5 million off a relatively low $12 million budget, effectively doubling its production costs in its first week of release. If the staying power of the low-budget religious film God's Not Dead is any indication, Heaven Is For Real could prove to be a profit machine for Screen Gems, TriStar and Sony Pictures.

In one of the bigger disappointments of the year so far, the CGI-filled sci-fi thriller Transcendence (with a $100 million production budget), starring an all-star ensemble including fan favorite Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, Kate Mara, Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy and Rebecca Hall, debuted in fourth, only managing to earn $11.1 million.

It’s unclear why audiences failed to connect with the film, as its advertising campaign was massive, but it could have something to do with lackluster reviews, earning only 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a meager 44% on Metacritic.

Whatever the reason, this makes for two box office flops in a row for Johnny Depp, and will likely tarnish his reputation as box office gold. It also doesn't fare well for first-time director Wally Pfister, best known for his Oscar-winning cinematography in most of Christopher Nolan's acclaimed films.

In fifth place is newcomer A Haunted House 2, which managed to scare up (sorry) $9.1 million, already more than doubling its $4 million budget. Like so many spoof films before it, minimal production budgets and semi-big named comic stars manage to make most films of this ilk very profitable, while being critically derided (A Haunted House 2 currently has a 7% on Rotten Tomatoes.)
