Comic book movie fans have been waiting on tenterhooks to learn who Marvel Studios have picked to take the helm on 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel’ – and, well, they’ll have to keep waiting for now.

A brief update has been given on ‘Captain Marvel’ by film journalist Justin Kroll via Twitter, concisely bringing us up to speed on where things stand with what will be Marvel’s first female-fronted solo movie.

Not an earth-shattering update, but this may be an instance in which no news is good news. Marvel have had ‘Captain Marvel’ on their schedule for quite some time now, so clearly they’re not rushing into anything here, which should hopefully mean they’re putting in all the work needed to make the best film they can.

The first names linked to ‘Captain Marvel’ were screenwriters Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Then at San Diego Comic Con 2016, Marvel unveiled their chosen actress for the title role: ‘Room’ Oscar winner Brie Larson.

However, director news has long been thin on the ground. Marvel have declared their intent to hire a female director for the film, and back in August three key names were linked for the job: Niki Caro (‘Whale Rider’), Lorene Scafaria (‘Seeking a Friend at the End of the World’), and seasoned TV director Lesli Linka Glatter.

The lack of any confirmation regarding those directors plus Kroll’s tweet would seem to make clear that Marvel have yet to find their ideal candidate.

Larson will portray Carol Danvers, a US air force pilot who is accidentally imbued with super-powers of extra-terrestrial origin which make her one of, if not the most powerful hero in the Marvel universe: super-speed, super-strength, flight, accelarated healing, psychic ability, the works.

It remains unknown whether Captain Marvel might make an appearance in another Marvel movie prior to her solo feature, much as Black Panther and Spider-Man did in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ – but despite rumours, there remains no confirmation as to whether or not she’ll make her debut in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’

Either way, ‘Captain Marvel’ is due in cinemas 8 March 2019.
