Two men, 20 and 24, killed after car plummets off bridge and plunges into river
Two young men were left dead after the car they were in careered off a bridge into a river.
The tragic crash happened on Saturday evening in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and on Sunday police confirmed that two men aged 20 and 24 had died in the incident.
Images from the scene of the crash, which happened on Meadowhall Way at around 7.10pm, show a broken railing on the bridge which it is believed the car ploughed through before plunging into the River Don below.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said on Sunday: “At 7.10pm last night police received reports that a vehicle had entered the river off Meadowhall Way in Sheffield.
“Two men aged 20 and 24 were taken to Northern General Hospital, where they were sadly pronounced dead.
“Family members have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.”
The force also addressed online speculation that the the car was being pursued by police at the time of the crash.
The spokesman said: “The vehicle involved in this incident was not being pursued or followed by the police.”
They added: “It was a very distressing incident for all involved.
“All emergency services were at the scene within minutes and entered the water to help.
“South Yorkshire Police will be releasing further details later.”
