Carrie Fisher wasn’t just on-screen during the making of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ – she helped to write the script too, according to the movie’s writer and director Rian Johnson.

Johnson revealed at the annual Star Wars Celebration event in Florida that he met with her at her home in Beverly Hills on many occasions to make sure he was getting the words right.

“I connected with her first and foremost as a writer,” he said, describing their meetings as being like ‘a kind of stream of consciousness, jazz poetry’.

“She’s a brilliant writer, with an incredible mind. I’d go to her house and we’d sit on her bed for hours going through the script.

“Then, at the end of six hours, there would be this four word line of dialogue that would be the distillation of all that. That was brilliant.”

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy had her own words of praise for the late star at the event.

“It was extraordinary, needless to say,” she said of her last time working with Fisher.

“Carrie is remarkable in the movie. What Rian wrote, and the performance she ends up giving, I think you guys are going to find that an amazing tribute to her talent.”

Fisher had completed her work on the movie, prior to her death on December 27, 2016, which came after she suffered a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

Kennedy confirmed last week that she will not be appearing in episode IX, following comments from her brother Todd Fisher, who said that the family had given permission to Lucasfilm to use ‘recent footage’ of her.

“Sadly, Carrie will not be in nine,” said Kennedy. “But we will see a lot of Carrie in eight.”

It’s due out on December 15 across the UK.
