Cars 3 Will Be “Very Emotional,” Says John Lasseter

There are without doubt many of us who would question the need for a third ‘Cars’ movie, given that the first two tend to be among the least highly-regarded works ever produced by Pixar.

Nonetheless, ‘Cars 3′ is indeed on its way; yet another Pixar sequel to follow in the wake of this year’s ‘Finding Dory’ (with ‘Toy Story 4′ and ‘The Incredibles 2′ also in the pipeline).

However, where the action-packed spy spoof ‘Cars 2′ veered off in a radically different direction from the comparatively sombre ‘Cars,’ director John Lasseter says the third film will have more in common with the original. (Judge for yourself as to whether or not this is a good thing.)

Lasseter tells EW, “Lightning McQueen, he’s awesome. We’ve got some great new characters, some great racing in it. It’s a very emotional story. It’s a little bit more akin to Cars 1, where you get into a deep emotion with him.

“It’s really a special story. It’s very emotional and his relationship with Doc Hudson, and his memory of Doc Hudson.”

Doc Hudson was the last role performed by the late screen legend Paul Newman, and the character served as something of a father figure to Owen Wilson’s wild and reckless racer McQueen.

However, while ‘Cars’ and its sequel shifted a lot of merchandise for Pixar parent company Disney. neither of them were anywhere near as well-received as the like of ‘Up,’ ‘Inside Out’ and the ‘Toy Story’ movies.

Will this third film finally overcome the tone and story issues that troubled the first two? We’ve got almost exactly a year to find out, as ‘Cars 3′ is out 16 June 2017.
