Cats Is Being Re-Released With 'Improved Visual Effects' After Critics Tear Into Film

An updated version of Cats has quietly been released by Universal Pictures, after the film was torn apart by critics.

Reviews for the film were published earlier this week week and were overwhelmingly negative, with The Telegraph giving it zero stars, while it currently has a critics score of 19% on film review site Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hollywood Reporter has now claimed to have seen a memo claiming cinemas will be receiving an updated version of the film with “some improved visual effects”.

HuffPost UK has contacted representatives for the film for comment.

Some critics were shown an unfinished version of Cats earlier this month, while The Hollywood Reporter also pointed out that film director Tom Hooper has said it was a struggle to get the film finished in time for its global release date on Friday.

Tom also said that the reaction to the film’s trailer – which was largely panned for its CGI – led to certain characters being redesigned.

In our review of the film, we said: “There’s little evidence of [these redesigns] in the film itself.

“In the middle of scenes, actors’ faces appear to change positions on their cat characters’ heads, which is a particular issue when they’re in motion. And given that Cats is a dance-led musical film, there are a lot of times when the characters are moving about.”

Other critics and early viewers have named the characters’ human hands and noses as being among the film’s biggest design issues.

Among Cats’ all-star cast are Dame Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson, while another of its stars, Jason Derulo, recently hit back after the first reviews were published.

Cats is in cinemas now.

Christina Aguilera in 'Burlesque'

'Burlesque' starts off as a camp musical, but takes a downward turn towards the end, and winds up being more about planning permission and property law, than sequins and feather boas. Despite the confusing turn of events in the film's latter half, Xtina's co-star, Cher, is flawless throughout. But you could probably assume that for yourself.

Rihanna in 'Battleship'

Come on, RiRi. If you were going to star in a film about a board game you could have at least picked a more interesting one.

Madonna in 'Body Of Evidence'

Throughout it all, Madonna has insisted she's not a bad actress, she's just been in a lot of bad movies. Narrowing those "bad movies" down to just one is not an easy task, but among the worst is surely 'Body Of Evidence', which did its best to cash in on the 'Basic Instinct'/'Fatal Attraction'/'Single White Female' style of female-led thrillers at the time. To no avail, sadly for Madonna, whose career took an out-of-character wobble shortly after this film came out.

Mariah Carey in 'Glitter'

In 2010, Mariah Carey blamed the 9/11 terrorist attacks for the fact that 'Glitter' was a flop at the box office, claiming that because it hit cinemas on 11 September 2001, not a lot of people actually got to see it. She told PA: "Could there be a worse day for that movie to come out? If I could go back in time and not do it, yeah, I would definitely not do it."

Beyoncé in 'Obsessed'

After starring in her fair share of less-than-well-received films, Beyoncé finally started getting some recognition for her role in the musical, 'Dreamgirls', that saw her playing to her strengths and belting it out like the best of them. And then she went and spoiled it all by saying something stupid like 'Obsessed' (and yes, that is Idris Elba).

What's funny is that we spent the entire length of 'Gigli' pulling the exact same face as Ben Affleck in this film still.

Taylor Swift in 'Valentine's Day'

If you only got into Taylor Swift once she released '1989', it might have completely escaped your attention she was once in 'Valentine's Day', one of those heinous 'New Year's Eve'-type films that focus on about a hundred different characters over the course of one day.

Britney Spears in 'Crossroads'

The most far-fetched part of 'Crossroads' wasn't three young women going on a cross-country drive to find one of their mothers, only for them to fear they'd picked up a felon along the way. No, it was the idea that Britney Spears could write a song like 'I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman', and then suddenly put it to music the exact second Justin Long started strumming his guitar. Nope.

Kelly Clarkson in 'From Justin To Kelly'

Now, in Kelly Clarkson's defence, she never actually wanted to do this film, but was required to as part of her 'American Idol' contract, after she was crowned the show's first ever winner. She later admitted: "I knew when I read the script it was going to be real, real bad, but when I won, I signed that piece of paper, and I could not get out of it." 'From Justin To Kelly' is constantly listed among the worst films ever made, but she did later give us 'Since U Been Gone' and 'What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)', so all is definitely forgiven.
