Charles Melton explains how Riverdale prepared him for May December role

May December star Charles Melton has explained how Riverdale helped prepare him for his role in the movie.

Starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, the feature film follows a Hollywood star (Portman) who travels to meet and research the life of a woman (Moore) and her husband (Melton), whose relationship started with a scandal – he was 13 and she was 36.

Speaking to i-D, Melton – who plays Joe Atherton-Yoo in the film – revealed how the past seven years on the hit Netflix series influenced his acting.

"I learned so much being there. I formed relationships that I will have until the end of my days. It really helped me refine this work ethic. Riverdale truly was my Juilliard – I was learning and growing and playing and taking risks. I was allowed to do that," he said.

The actor went on to describe the "bittersweet" feeling he experienced following the show's seventh and final season. "I'm so happy it brought joy to so many people," he added.

May December had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it received critical acclaim and praise for Moore and Portman's performances.

Melton has also been the talk of the town, after winning the Gotham Outstanding Supporting Performance award and the New York Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film.

Following his awards success, the star spoke to Digital Spy to express how "grateful" he felt to get an opportunity to work with his co-stars and director Todd Haynes.

"I'm just grateful to be here. I think about those 23 days that we spent filming in Georgia, and it was the greatest of my career. Working with Natalie and Julie, with Todd Haynes. That was the cake, you never really think about anything other than that," he explained.

Melton also touched on the difficulties he faced while filming, saying: "There were many challenging moments, but for me, the rooftop scene with Gabriel [Chung], who plays Charlie, I learned a lot that day as an actor to not get in the way of telling my character's story."

May December is now available to watch on Netflix US, and on Sky Cinema in the UK.
