Charlie Hunnam explains his Rebel Moon accent

Rebel Moon star Charlie Hunnam has explained his accent in Zack Snyder's newest Netflix film.

The Queer as Folk and Green Street actor plays mercenary and starship pilot Kai in the film about a colony who need to defend their home against invaders.

There's been quite a bit of chatter online about Hunnam's Northern Irish accent, and not all of that chatter has been positive.

Speaking to The Hook, Hunnam explained the process behind his twang, revealing that not only did he use an accent coach for the first time in his career, but he also actually changed it after test screenings.

"I'm a little self-conscious to make a big move and do an accent," he stated. "My favourite accent, which I've been looking for an opportunity to use, it's the Belfast accent.

"And I worked really hard with a really fantastic dialect coach, probably must say, the first time in my career. I absolutely nailed the accent. Like, I think it was perfect, but the American audience couldn't really understand a word I was saying.

"So then we had to ADR it and pull it back a bit. So listen, I justified it, that we're several thousand years in the future so maybe it's like the you know, space version of the original accent."

The film is the first of a two-part series (so far), but before we get the second film – subtitled The Scargiver – we're actually getting an extended Director's Cut edition. The re-cut is expected to drop on Netflix in early 2024, with the sequel set for April 19.
