Chase Crawford has always said he’d be up for a return to Gossip Girl’s Upper East Side, should the right idea present itself. But when the news broke that HBO were planning a next generation show, the actor admitted to Kevin Smith that he didn’t know anything about it.

He made the revelation while being interviewed about his new superhero series The Boys at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Sitting with the rest of The Boys’ cast, Smith asked him, “Did you hear they are doing a Gossip Girl spin-off?”

To which the actor admitted, “I did hear that. I didn’t get a phone call. I just woke up to these new articles.”

The actor, who played Nate Archibald for all six seasons of Gossip Girl, has now reiterated to the Independent that he would return to the series if asked.

“I always say I’m open to it,” he explained. Adding, “but in reality, we’re all a lot older so what do you do there? It’d be tough to get everyone back together, but maybe we could do a movie. It could be a riskier, grittier version. Or just give it another 10 years and we’ll be playing the parents of the new cast.”

Interestingly, the show’s creator Josh Schwartz says all the originals have been contacted. At a Hulu event on Friday, he said, “we’ve reached out to all of them to let them know it’s happening, and that we would love for them to be involved if they want to be involved.” Adding, “obviously any time anybody wants [to come back] it would be great to see them again.”

He went on to explain the new version of the show will look at influencer culture and will tell “that story through a new generation of Upper East Side high school kids.”

So it sounds like the ball may be back in Crawford’s court. But then his new show The Boys – in which he plays corrupt superhero The Deep – has just been commissioned for a second season for Amazon Prime.

The show developed by Supernatural’s Eric Kripke is adapted from the graphic novels by Garth Ennis.

Netflix has recently added the original Gossip Girl to their streaming service.
