Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget director Sam Fell has explained why it was originally decided not to bring Mrs Tweedy back for the new film.

Mrs Tweedy (voiced by Miranda Richardson) will make her return in the upcoming sequel, despite appearing to meet a gravy-filled demise at the end of the 2000 film.

However, the director has now exclusively revealed to Digital Spy that Dawn of the Nugget didn't always include the famous villain.

"It sounds completely bonkers now that we're here, but it was just a thought that, you know, new film, new villain; you move things along," Fell told us, adding that Chicken Run 2 originally had a male antagonist.

"We always thought that we wanted to make a new movie for a new audience, for new times," he continued.

"So we've always between trying to find that right line between: what do we keep from the first? And what I like now is that although now Mrs Tweedy is back, she's back in a new way, and we've given her a whole kind of makeover."

Mrs Tweedy's updated look can be seen in the film's trailer, with the character sporting a stylish glow-up and joined by a new evil counterpart, Reginald Smith (voiced by Peter Serafinowicz).

Noting that the original movie had a "very female-centric" story, Fell added that Chicken Run 2 was "always about parenthood" – with the focus shifting to Ginger in later drafts.

"We always thought it would be interesting for Rocky and Ginger to settle down and have a kid, because that's a new challenge," he said.

"But originally it was Rocky and Nobby, and there was a male villain as well. It was really interesting.

"But it became clear, I think, for me and a number of us – we felt that in the DNA of the first Chicken Run film, it's a very female-centric film.

"It's full of great female characters, and Ginger is such an amazing hero."

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is in select UK cinemas from December 8 and released on Netflix on December 15.
