Hold on to your drumsticks, because Chicken Run is getting a sequel and it's coming to Netflix.

The streaming studio has confirmed that a follow up to the Aardman Animations feature is on the way, announcing the news exactly 20 years to the day after the first movie was released.

Production is due to begin next year.

The first movie was directed by Morph creator and Aardman founder Peter Lord and four-time Oscar winner Nick Park.

It found Mel Gibson voicing Rocky, the rooster who crash-lands on Tweedy's farm and teaches the chickens, who are bound for the chop, to fly.

The movie also featured a stellar voice cast, including Julia Sawalha, Miranda Richardson, Timothy Spall, Phil Daniels, Jane Horrocks, Benjamin Whitrow and Imelda Staunton.

It was a smash, making $225 million (£180 million) at the worldwide box office from its modest $45 million (£36 million) production budget.

The movie also still holds the world record for the highest-grossing stop motion animation of all time, just behind Aardman's other major hit Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which made $194 million in 2005.

Per the (very brief) synopsis for the new movie: “The chickens, after escaping the farm owned by the Tweedys, have been living on their new island where they enjoy their freedom.”

It’s not been confirmed yet who, if any, of the original cast may be appearing.

It will be directed by Sam Fell, who helmed Aardman's Flushed Away, with Nick Park producing and a screenplay from Karey Kirkpatrick and John O'Farrell.

Lord and fellow Aardman co-founder David Sproxton are executive producers.
