Three children aged four, six and eight and a woman from the same family have died in a crash between a people carrier and a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) on the A40 near Oxford.

Two other passengers in the Subaru people carrier, a 30-year-old man and 18-month-old girl, have been taken to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and are in a critical condition, Thames Valley Police said.

The 56-year-old HGV driver has suffered minor injuries in the collision, which happened by a railway bridge to the west of Oxford.

Emergency services were dispatched at 9.50pm on Monday as multiple calls from the public came in.

The family came from Chinnor, Oxfordshire. The children and 29-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene.

Sergeant Dominic Mahon, of the serious collision investigation unit at Thames Valley Police, described the scene as “extremely upsetting”.

“We are in the very early stages of our investigation into this incredibly tragic incident that has resulted in the deaths of four people from the same family,” he said.

The officer appealed for anyone driving in the area at the time of the crash and saw what happened to call 101 or report it on the Thames Valley Police website quoting reference 43200321914.

Anyone with dash-cam footage of what happened, or of either vehicle before the collision, should contact police and not share it publicly.

“I would ask the public and media to please not speculate as to the cause of this horrendous incident. We will leave no stone unturned to ascertain what has caused this tragedy,” Sgt Mahon said.

The family’s next of kin is being supported by police and officers remain at the scene on the A40, which has reopened.
