Chloe Moretz: Why The 5th Wave Is Nothing Like Divergent Or Hunger Games

Yahoo Movies chatted to Chloe Moretz, Nick Robinson and Alex Roe about their new sci-fi action film ‘The 5TH Wave’, which is based on the bestselling novel by Rick Yancey.

We asked the trio how the film compares with other successful young adult films like ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Divergent’.

Star Chloe Moretz said: “The story doesn’t centre around me falling in love with a boy and fighting for his life or fighting for my life to stick with him, it has nothing to do with that. Sure, there are romance elements but its nothing like ‘Divergent’ or ‘Hunger Games’ – it’s a singular project. We’re not a hundred years in the future, we don’t have any government rules coming down on us. This is fully a story about if aliens attacked right now and we lost all communication with each other and these waves were killing everyone around us and how we would react.”

‘Jurassic World’ star Nick Robinson said: “I think it stands alone once people see it. They’ll realise its very different from those films. First of all no one has special powers in this. There is not a chosen one, someone who has been pre-ordained to save the world. It’s really about just people who have been put into extraordinary situations that they have no control over that they are expected to survive.”

British star Alex Roe (who started out in ‘Holby City’!), said: “Its these huge extreme events that are happening in today’s time. It’s as if tomorrow this stuff started happening, it’s not set in the future. It’s relatable in a completely different way [to those films]. People can imagine themselves in Chloe’s shoes and see how we try and survive these situations.”

‘The 5th Wave’ is in cinemas now.
