It’s been revealed that Hollywood starlet Chloe Moretz (’Kick-Ass’; ‘Hugo’) will star in the live-action adaptation of ‘The Little Mermaid’.
Based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale, Moretz, 18, will feature as the mermaid that sacrifices it all for the prince she falls in love with.
Variety report that scribe Richard Curtis will pen the screenplay and adapt the famed story. However, it should be noted that this version is not affiliated with Disney or indeed related to their 1989 classic animation.
While Moretz and Curtis are confirmed, the same cant be said for the rest of the cast and crew. Until recently, Sofia Coppola was meant to be directing the project, but after creative differences forced her to leave the production. And a new helmer hasn’t been acquired yet.
Moretz was clearly excited about it and revealed the good news on Twitter to her fans.
And even though Curtis is on scripting duties, he’s still to get the final draft completed. But that shouldn’t be an issue for the ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ writer, with the focus now being on assembling a crew and strong cast around their lead.
In truth we’re not entirely sure how closely the narrative will stick to the classic story, nor do we know when it’ll be released either. Those eager to see this live-action fantasy shouldn’t get too excited just yet, as it’ll likely be a few years before it sees the light of day.
