The Chucky TV spin-off first reported almost a year ago has officially been ordered to series by Syfy.

Masterminded by Don Mancini, the basics of the franchise consider a psychotic, possessed doll named Chucky who harbours the spirit of a serial killer.

With eight feature-films in total, the character has become a cult favourite among horror fans since the first release (titled Child's Play) back in 1988 – but now it's his time to shine on the small screen.

According to TV Line, the upcoming series will witness a small town thrown into chaos after a Chucky doll emerges at a yard sale.

A flurry of horrifying murders ensue which threaten to expose a number of the town's dark secrets, while friends and foes from the sinister doll's past attempt to bring the truth to light.

But that's not all, as apparently an "untold origin story" will also play out – explaining how an ordinary child transformed into a monster.

Ecstatic to be bringing back a true horror icon, USA and Syfy entertainment president Chris McCumber said in a statement: "The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years.

"We are incredibly proud to bring Chucky to television for the first time with the original creators."
