Chukwudi Iwuji reveals important Guardians of the Galaxy 3 villain details

Chukwudi Iwuji, about to make his Marvel debut in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has revealed more details about his character.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Iwuji opened up about how he created High Evolutionary, the MCU’s newest villain.

"There were two moments that happened around the same read-through of the script," he revealed. "My first read of it was when he's first introduced, listening to space opera.

"I was like, 'OK, I get a guy that does the things I know he's going to do and he loves space opera'."

"And the second one was this extraordinary line that he has later in the movie when he screams out 'There is no God, that's why I stepped in'. I was like, 'OK, now I know how this guy sees himself'."

It was equally revealing when High Evolutionary moves to a higher step to appear taller – and more important – than Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki).

"You look for those little clues. That step is a great example of, 'Wow, the ego of this guy'," said Iwuji. "That was another sort of anchor point for me for the kind of person that he is."

Ahead of the release of the sequel, the Peacemaker actor reflected on collaborating with the film's director, James Gunn.

"I know James," he explained. "We developed a sort of vocabulary together. I know that he likes to see what I bring, we see if it matches with what he has, and if it matches, he always goes, 'OK, now do whatever you want'…

"Many scenes in doing Peacemaker with him started one way and ended in a completely different way because he was open to saying, 'We've got it, what else can we do with it?'."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is released in UK cinemas on May 3 and in US cinemas on May 5.
