Cody Johnson Reveals the Sweet Reason He Proposed to His Wife in a Texas Roadhouse Parking Lot
If it weren't for Brandi Johnson, chances are none of us would know the name Cody Johnson or have the pleasure of listening to his music. Cody Johnson has been with his wife Brandi Johnson since 2008 after meeting when they were just 14 and 17.
"I pretty much owe everything I have to her," Cody said. "I pray daily, 'Thank you for this woman.'... She had all the faith in me," Johnson admitted in an interview with Cowboys and Indians. Here's everything we know about Cody Johnson and Brandi Johnson's relationship, from the very beginning to current day.
Cody and Brandi Johnson's Love Story
Cody and Brandi first crossed path when Brandi was 14 and Cody was 17 at a Future Farmers of America event, where Cody was competing in bull riding (even though he had a broken leg at the time from the sport). Four years later, the pair crossed paths again at a strip mall bar in Huntsville, Texas, called Shenanigans, where Cody regularly performed. That night Cody asked for Brandi's number and by then they were 18 and 21. Wasting no time, just a month after Cody got Brandi's number that night, they moved in together.
The future Johnsons dated for exactly one year before Cody proposed. Johnson explained how he popped the question in an interview with Coyote Country: "This might be really cheesy. I'll tell you how I proposed to my wife. On our first date, I took her to a Texas Roadhouse here locally, and we sat in a booth and I was just so in love, and I could not wait to make her my wife. A year later to the date, we parked in the same spot, went to the same booth, and when we walked back out to the truck to leave, I got on a knee and asked her to marry me, and it was pretty special." They were married the following year in 2008.
Cody Johnson's new song and accompanying music video "The Painter" details their love story. "'The Painter' music video was filmed to tell the story of meeting and building a life with my beautiful wife, Brandi. Each lyric is a reflection of the remarkable journey shared with her," he wrote on Instagram.
When they got married, Brandi was in college. Shortly after, she dropped out in order to work two jobs to support both of them, allowing Cody to pursue music full time. "When I met her, I was a pretty crazy young guy and she’s helped me grow,” Cody admitted. “She’s helped me become a man that I’m proud to be. She holds down the house and she holds down the whole fort. From little simple things like my clothes going to the cleaners and coming back and being ready for the road — just little stuff and every little tiny thing she does is so big for me. She gives me the courage to keep going," Johnson admitted in his interview with Cowboys and Indians.
Brandi's early sacrifice and encouragement definitely paid off, and now she continues to support and inspire him every step of the way. "There are times I've wanted to quit music in the last five years even. I've come home and said, 'I'm done. I can't do this anymore. It's eating me up,' " he shared. "And she'd say, 'Yes, you can. You got to. You've got to get back to work, have a better mindset, and push through.' " he continued. "And I did. If I had to give it all up for her, I'd do it," Johnson gushed.
As his music career finally started to take off, Brandi and Cody welcomed their first child Clara Mae in 2015. Two years later, they had their second child, Cori. Now, Brandi and his two daughters travel with Johnson on tour across the country. "We're very fortunate – my wife and my two girls get to come with me a lot on the bus. We got our own bus just for that," Johnson told People in 2018. "When you're gonna go on the lead singer's bus, you think you're gonna see a lot of thing, not toys and diapers everywhere, but that's generally what it looks like." Now that the girls are older, Brandi is busy homeschooling them both on the road and at home on their ranch in East Texas.
Though Brandi generally stays out of the public eye, she occasionally steps out on an awards show red carpet alongside her husband, and you can also catch her featured in some of Cody's music videos including "With You I Am" and "Human." After more than 15 years together, Cody and Brandi Johnson are still happily married, and, of course, she's to thank for all of Cody's fan-favorite love songs.
