Comic-Con: Whedon announces title of Avengers 2

The Avengers: Age of Ultron will appear in 2015

Following his recent statement that pop culture is in need of new material, Joss Whedon took the stage at Hall H today to introduce a brief teaser clip for a new film.

And the title of that new film? 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'

[2015: the biggest year for movies ever?]

Whedon took the stage following Marvel President Kevin Feige led the panels for 'Thor: The Dark World', 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', and 'Guardians of the Galaxy.'  Feige introduced Whedon by saying, “There’s only one more person here.  He wanted to say, ‘Hi.’  Joss Whedon!”  Whedon then introduced the clip with the words:  “Hi.  I know it’s time to go, and I don’t have a lot to say, but I have something to add.”

The clip shown at Comic-Con showed a CGI head of Ultron appearing out of beaten metal over dialogue from the last Avengers movie.

Rumours abounded that Thanos would be the enemy in the Avengers sequel, but a brief mention at the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' panel suggested we might see Thanos appear in that movie movie instead.

'Age of Ultron' was originally a 10-issue limited series comic book crossover, published earlier this year,  involving the return of Ultron and his conquest of the earth. The fact that the Avengers sequel is based on a new series has blogs and websites speculating that Marvel may be planning to do doing more projects that go quickly from page to screen.

The announcement follows Whedon's statement on a panel on Friday where he called for the studios to come up with new story lines.

I do feel like we are in desperate need of new content,” said Whedon. “Pop culture is eating itself at a rate that is going to be dangerous. Too many narratives are built on the resonance of recognition. That’s going to become really problematic.”

'The Avengers: Age of Ultron' is set to open in May, 2015.
