Comic-Con 2014 Film Panel Schedule: ‘Star Wars,’ ‘X-Men’ and More

San Diego Comic-Con originally branded itself by aptly showing primarily comicbooks. Now, in its 45th year, the convention has become an entertainment haven, showcasing producers, stars, writers and hundreds of personalities to promote pop culture from July 23-27. View our tentative schedule of Comic-Con’s film panels and events below, with further updates as they are announced. Variety will be in attendance at SDCC as well, bringing the news, interviews and important panel information to the web.

July 24

“The Legacy and Return of Battlestar Galactica” (10:30 a.m., Room 6BCF) Original series actors Richard Hatch, Jamie Bamber and Luciana Carro, as well as the show’s science consultant Dr. Kevin Grazier and auction producer Alec Peters, host a discussion on the upcoming movie. Surprise guests and theatrical trailers are planned.

“Godzilla and The Master of Monsters” (11:00 a.m., Room 23ABC) A discussion on Eiji Tsuburaya, the “Master of Monsters” who created Godzilla and co-created Ultraman, presented by August Ragone, David E. Chapple and Arian Hinojosa. Panel will feature rare behind-the-scenes photographs of the original “Godzilla” films, as well as a discussion on the “kaiju” genre and its visual effects.

“Masters of the Web: Comic Book Movies” (11:30 a.m., Room 24ABC) Internet personalities John Campea, Jeremy Jahns, Tiffany Smith, Kristian Harloff, Mark Ellis, Jon Schnepp and “Arrow” actor Manu Bennett discuss current and upcoming comic book features.

“Dreamworks Animation” (11:30 a.m., Hall H) Craig Ferguson moderates a panel of upcoming Dreamworks Animations films. In attendance will be “Penguins of Madagascar” voice actors Benedict Cumberbatch, John Malkovich and Tom McGrath, directors Simon J. Smith and Eric Darnell, and “Home” director Tim Johnson.

“Sony Pictures Entertainment” (12:30 p.m., Indigo Ballroom) Star Jack Black and director Rob Letterman discuss bringing R. L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” to the big screen on Aug. 7. “Pixels” director Chris Columbus will be featured in a special video announcement about his film, releasing May 15, 2015, along with a chance for an attendee to be featured in the film.

“I Know That Voice: Insights From the Cutting Room Floor” (1:00 p.m., Room 25ABC) Executive producer of documentary “I Know That Voice” brings together cast and crew of the film, including Fred Tatasciore, Andrea Romano, Rob Paulsen, Lawrence Shapiro, Dee Bradley Baker, Brandon Stonnier and Steve Broback, to discuss behind-the-scenes techniques and deleted scenes.

“The Giver” (1:30 p.m., Hall H) Stars Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites and Odeya Rush, director Phillip Noyce and original author Lois Lowry discuss the film, releasing on Aug. 15, as well as premiere exclusive footage.

“1984’s Greatest Geek Movies: Big Brother Wasn’t the Only One Watching While Doves Cried” (2:00 p.m., Room 5AB) Various entertainment personalities Ashley E. Miller, David E. Williams, Robert Meyer, Marc Berandin, Steve Melching, Joe Kraemer and Mark A. Altman discuss the best films of 1984, including “The Terminator,” “Gremlins” and “Ghostbusters.”

“The Art of Big Hero Six” (2:00 p.m., Room 7AB) Director Don Hall, producer Roy Conli, production designer Paul Felix and character designer Shiyoon Kim discuss the visual effects and art of Disney’s upcoming animated feature inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name.

“Illustrators of the Art Directors Guild” (3:00 p.m., Room 23ABC) Illustrators and storyboard artists Tim Burgard (“Jurassic Park”), Donna Cline (“Bones”), Stephen Platt (“Iron Man”), Trevor Goring (“X-Men”) and Darrin Denlinger (“The Avengers: Age of Ultron”) discuss working on feature films.

“Paramount Pictures” (3:00 p.m., Hall H) Paramount Pictures and special guests share exclusive footage and news of their upcoming features for 2014.

“That Again? Avoiding Repetition in Animated Features” (3:30 p.m., Room 26AB) Animation critic Charles Solomon leads a discussion on the state of animated filmmaking with directors and producers David Silerman (“The Pink Panther”), Doug Sweetland (“Storks”) and Morishima Taro (“Paprika”).

“Hollywood Location Scouts” (4:00 p.m., Marriott Hall 2) Hollywood location scouts Scott Trimble (“Tomorrowland”), Chris Baugh (“Transcendence”), Mandi Dillin (“Iron Man 3”), Ann Goobie (“X-Men: The Last Stand”), J. J. Hook (“Transformers: Age of Extinction”) and Michael John Meehan (“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”) discuss working with directors and designers to create the world of films.

“An Unofficial Look at the Final Middle-Earth Film: The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies” (5:00 p.m., Indigo Ballroom) The staff of TheOneRing.net discuss the final in the Peter Jackson series without studio sanctioning, including rumors and projections.

“WWE Studios and Lionsgate: A Look Behind the Horror of Leprechaun: Origins and See No Evil 2” (7:00 p.m., Room 7AB) “See No Evil 2” directors Jen and Sylvia Soska and actor Kane, “Leprechaun: Origins” director Zach Lipovsky and star Hornswoggle host a panel on their upcoming features. WWE Studios president Michael Luisi will unveil re-designed character art for characters from both films.

“Freddy vs. Jason vs. Michael: Inside the Minds of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers” (8:00 p.m., Room 7AB) Horror personality Evan Dickson, “Freddy vs. Jason” writer Mark Swift and former psychiatrists H. Eric Bender, Praveen R. Kambam and Vasilis K. Pozios discuss the psychology and intentions behind the famous movie villains.

“Ric Meyers’ Superhero Kung Fu Extravaganza” (8:00 p.m., Room 6A) Ric Meyers hosts his 17th panel on Asian action film fight scenes with Web personalities Graham Elwood, Chris J. Mancini and Eric Jacobus, along with special guests, sneak peeks and audience prizes.

“The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – A Look Under the Shell” (8:15 p.m., Room 6DE) Co-creator Kevin Eastman discusses the 30-year history of the franchise with a Q&A featuring crew of the new documentary “Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” Randall Lobb, Isaac Elliott-Fischer, Mark Hussey and Galen Walker.

July 25

“Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy” (11:00 a.m., Room 7AB) Art director and visual effect designer Joe Johnston discusses newly published storyboard and conceptual art from the original trilogy, as well as J. J. Abram’s newest production, with Lucasfilm editor J. W. Rinzler.

“The Chair: One Script, Two Visions, One Winner” (1:30 p.m., Marriott Hall 2) “The Chair” creator Chris Moore (“Good Will Hunting”) hosts a panel with screenwriter Dan Schoffer and producers Zachary Quinto (“Star Trek”) and Josh Shader showing clips of films by Shane Dawson and Anna Martemucci, competitors in “The Chair’s” feature film directing competition.

“Big Ideas for Movies: Crossing Borders with Mexican Animation” (3:00 p.m., Room 23ABC) Ricardo Arnaiz discusses the trials and adventures of making his new feature “El Americano 3D,” alongside producing partners Edward James Olmos (“Battlestar Galactica”), Phil Roman (“The Simpsons”), Veronica Arceo, Alex Flores, Gerry Cardoso and Michael D. Olmos. Rico Rodriguez (“Modern Family”), Raul Garcia (“Aladdin”), Mike Kunkel (“Tarzan”) and Richard Pursel (“Spongebob Squarepants”) will appear.

“RADiUS-TWC Previews Horns and Everly” (3:00 p.m., Hall H) “Horns” stars Daniel Radcliffe and Juno Temple, director Alexandre Aja and author Joe Hill will talk about the upcoming movie, with an audience Q&A and world premiere trailer. “Everly” star Salma Hayek and director Joe Lynch will show new footage. Additional RADiUS-TWC titles will be revealed and discussed.

“Digging E.T.: Behind the Scenes of the Xbox Originals Documentary, Atari: Game Over” (3:30 p.m., Room 5AB) Atari’s Nolan Bushnell and Howard Scott Warshaw talk with Xbox’s Larry Hyrb about the new documentary, discussing the fall of the Atari Corporation following events in 1983. They will be joined by producers Simon Chinn (“Searching for Sugar Man”) and Jonathan Chinn (“30 Days”), writer Zak Penn (“The Avengers”) and Fuel CEO Mike Burns.

“Free Enterprise: 15th Anniversary Reunion” (3:30 p.m., Room 24ABC) Cult classic “Free Enterprise” writer Mark A. Altman and director Robert Meyer Burnett are interviewed by Scott Mantz regarding the comedy’s legacy on its 15th anniversary, as well as progress on the Kickstarter for the “Free Enterprise” TV pilot.

“Exclusive Sneak Peek Screening of the Showrunners Documentary Film” (3:30 p.m., Horton Grand Theatre) A sneak peek screening of “Showrunners,” a new documentary feature that looks into the jobs of U.S. television showrunners and their colleagues.

“Cartoon Saloon’s Song of the Sea” (4:00 p.m., Room 23ABC) Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon (“The Secret of Kells”) shows exclusive footage and behind-the-scenes material from their upcoming animated film “Song of the Sea” with director Tomm Moore, producer Paul Young, Jamie Kezlarian Bolio and Don Hahn (“Beauty and the Beast”)

“20th Century Fox Presentation” (4:20 p.m., Hall H) 20th Century Fox shows off their upcoming projects, specifics currently unannounced.

“The Superheroes of Legacy Effects” (6:00 p.m., Room 28DE) Members of special effects studio Legacy Effects and other industry figures Alan Scott, John Rosengrant, Shane Mahan, Lindsay MacGowan and Jason Lopes discuss the legacy of effects on film, including behind-the-scenes images, footage and props. Special prizes will be given away.

“Making X-Men: Days of Future Past” (6:30 p.m., Room 5AB) Jeff Goldsmith interviews producer and writer Simon Kinberg about the production of “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” including behind-the-scenes dialogue and an audience Q&A.

“The Steam Engines of Oz, HP Lovecraft, and Pixies: Arcanamation” (6:30 p.m., Room 26AB) Arcanamation debut the opening scene of their upcoming animated feature “Pixies,” as well as behind-the-scenes looks at the production of “The Steam Engines of Oz” and “Howard Lovecraft & The Frozen Kingdom.”

“The Musk of Tusk: An Evening with Kevin Smith” (6:35 p.m., Hall H) Kevin Smith debuts the trailer for his new film “Tusk,” along with an audience Q&A.

“An Inside Look at Shout! Factory, Shout! Kids, and Scream Factory” (7:00 p.m., Room 23ABC) Shout! Factory’s Brian Ward, Melissa Boag and Jeff Nelson discuss upcoming DVD and Blu-ray projects with Kyle Anderson, along with special announcements.

“Neil Gaiman Documentary” (7:00 p.m., Room 4) Patrick Meaney and Jordan Rennert give an exclusive first look at their new documentary about fantasy storyteller Neil Gaiman, along with Cat Mihos and a special guest.

“World Premiere of Batman: Assault on Arkham” (7:00 p.m., Ballroom 20) Premiere screening of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s “Batman: Assault on Arkham.” The film will be followed by a discussion with filmmakers James Tucker, Jay Oliva, Andrea Romano and Heath Corson, as well as Kevin Conroy, Matthew Gray Gubler, Troy Baker, John DiMaggio and Victor Lucas. Special announcements and audience prizes will be given.

“Warner Bros. Pictures” (10:00 a.m., Hall H) Warner Bros. takes a look at three of their upcoming feature films, “Jupiter Ascending,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.”

“Legendary Pictures” (12:25 p.m., Hall H) Legendary Pictures shows off their upcoming projects, specifics currently unannounced.

“Warner Archive Collection: Trailers from Hell Live!” (1:00 p.m., Room 25ABC) Writers Josh Olson (“A History of Violence”), Larry Karaszewski (“Ed Wood”) and Stuart Gordon of Trailers from Hell discuss and analyze trailers of classic cult films with Warner Archive Collection podcasters George Feltenstein, Matthew Patterson and DW Ferranti.

“Batkid: The Film” (10:30 a.m., Room 8) Director Dana Nachman discusses her documentary of the overnight sensation Batkid in a panel featuring Chris Taylor and Batkid project personalities Patricia Wilson, Eric Johnston, Mike Jutan, Sue Graham Johnston.

“World Premiere of Tom and Jerry: The Lost Dragon” (2:15 p.m., Room 6A) Warner Bros. Home Entertainment premieres their new animated home video film “Tom and Jerry: The Lost Dragon” along with directors Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone.
