It was reported back in October that Amazon Studios were in talks to acquire worldwide rights to the movie from Paramount Pictures, in what was said to be a deal worth around $125 million.
Amazon Studios has now confirmed that Coming 2 America will launch worldwide in more than 240 countries and territories on Prime Video on March 5, 2021. It was originally set for a December 18, 2020 release in cinemas.
Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, the comedy sequel brings back Eddie Murphy as the newly-crowned King Akeem as he embarks on an all-new adventure that takes him and his trusted confidante (Arsenio Hall) back to where it all began – Queens, New York.
Coming To America stars including James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, John Amos and Louie Anderson are reprising their roles in the sequel, joining an all-star cast that also features Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, Tracy Morgan and more.
"Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time," said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios.
"Thanks to Eddie Murphy's comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers and fabulous cast, we couldn't be more excited to celebrate this new adventure. We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favourite."
Coming 2 America is directed by Craig Brewer and was written by Kenya Barris, Barry W Blaustein and David Sheffield, based on a story by Blaustein, Sheffield and Justin Kanew.
Coming 2 America will be released on Prime Video on March 5, 2021.
