The Conners spoilers follow.

The Conners has confirmed the exit of one of Roseanne's classic characters, after bringing her back for just one episode.

The most recent instalment of the spin-off, which was a two-parter, saw Darlene (Sara Gilbert) reconnect with high-spirited Molly Tilden (Danielle Harris, reprising her role from the original show), only to discover that that the next-door neighbour had died of brain cancer.

Having patched things up following their teenage rivalry, Molly had encouraged Darlene to live life to the fullest – something she'd vowed to do herself ever since she learned that she was dying.

Because of this new positive outlook, she'd bought herself and Darlene two first-class tickets to Hawaii. But they never had the chance to use them, with Darlene ultimately deciding to get them refunded and put the money towards getting an apartment with Ben.

When asked why they decided to bring Molly briefly, just to kill her off, showrunner Bruce Helford told TVLine: "We were really thinking about what would change Darlene's life. What would have a major effect on Darlene that would have some true effect on the relationship with Ben heading towards the end of the season?

"Molly back in the day tried to get Darlene to come out of her shell, and took her to her first concert. So we thought that'd be interesting, if they kind of lived the same life, they both got married too young and they just never had their twenties and thirties," he continued.

"Molly comes back into her life and they become friends, which is a real twist on what was going on between them [before].

"And that something major could happen that would bring Darlene to reevaluate how she's living her [own] life [was] kind of the genesis of all of it."

The Conners airs on ABC in the US.
