Constance Wu slams Casey Affleck's Oscar nomination
Actress Constance Wu has slammed Casey Affleck’s Oscar nomination in a series of furious tweets following the news that he’s up for Best Actor for his role in acclaimed drama ‘Manchester By The Sea’.
The star of comedy series ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ based her ire on the sexual harassment case Affleck was embroiled in while making his 2010 mockumentary ‘I’m Still Here’.
Two women accused the actor/director of harassment during the movie’s production and sued him in court.
However, a settlement for an undisclosed sum – the women sued for $2.5 million and $2 million – was agreed to and the suits were later dismissed.
Since Affleck – who always denied the accusations – has received critical acclaim for his performance in Kenneth Lonergan’s drama, the case has once again reared its head, angering some.
Wu tweeted:
Men who sexually harass women 4 OSCAR! Bc good acting performance matters more than humanity, human integrity!Bc poor kid rly needs the help!

I've been counseled not to talk about this for career's sake. F my career then, I'm a woman & human first. That's what my craft is built on.

It’s not the first matter of lawsuits affecting movies shooting for Oscar glory this year.
Nate Parker’s slave rebellion drama ‘The Birth Of A Nation’ was bought after a fierce bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival last year, eventually selling to Fox Searchlight for nearly $20 million.
It was its obvious Oscar potential which caused such fervour around the film, but it walked away with not a single nomination yesterday.
The uncovering of Parker’s 1999 rape trial, during which he was acquitted, overshadowed the movie’s press tour, effectively eradicating its chances. Almost all the other major awards bodies have ignored the movie too.
