Cooper liked calling De Niro 'dad'

22 November 2012

Bradley Cooper has revealed that one of the best things about being part of the impressive cast line-up of his new film Silver Linings Playbook was being able to call Robert De Niro "dad".

In the film, the handsome Hangover star plays Pat Solitano, a man who's lost everything - his wife, house, job - and has just spent eight months in a state institution for bi-polar treatment.

It also boasts stellar performances from a cast that includes former Oscar nominees Jennifer Lawrence and Jacki Weaver, while De Niro plays Pat's OCD father.

"It was extremely soothing to be able to say the word 'Dad' and have him be the person I was saying it to," said Bradley, who worked with De Niro, or Bob as he calls him, on 2011's Limitless.

"As a human being he's very softly spoken and giving. I trust and love him and know he's going to bring the best out of me."

Released ahead of awards season, the movie and cast are creating a lot of buzz, especially as it's directed by David O Russell, the man who led Christian Bale and Melissa Leo to Oscar glory in 2010's The Fighter.

It's David who recognised Bradley's potential to portray Pat's complicated mix of ferociousness and vulnerability.

"I first saw him in Wedding Crashers and his anger impressed me," said the director of the bullish character Brad played in the 2005 comedy. "He told me a little bit of that had been who he was at that time, and that was interesting, that he had all these layers.

"Just as Pat's coming home and reintroducing himself to the community and saying, 'Please, I don't think you know who I am', so I felt the actor was doing that to some degree."
