Coronation Street: Sean Wilson to return as Martin Platt after 13 years

Sean Wilson will be reprising his role of womanising Coronation Street favourite Martin Platt later this year, returning to the cobbles following son David’s rape storyline, it has been reported.

Sean will not be returning to the ITV soap for good, however, he will be onscreen for an “extended period” for the first time since he sensationally quit the show in 2005.

Speaking to The Sun, a source explained: “Martin has been mentioned a lot on the show since he left but it has involved other characters, mostly David, going to see him off-screen.

“But with David’s rape storyline, the writers thought it would be a good time to have him back properly.

“It’s not a permanent arrangement but fans will get to see Sean back as Martin for a good few weeks.”

Last month it was reported that Corrie will be exploring the taboo topic of male rape, with fan-favourite David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) set to be drugged and raped by a newcomer called Josh.

It is believed that the actual attack will not be shown on screen and the plot will focus more on the aftermath of David’s ordeal.

Producers hope that the storyline will help break down the stigma of male rape, with David set to feel feelings of shame and embarrassment – unsure whether he should go to the police or not.

Sean quit the soap after he clashed with show bosses over a storyline that saw Martin have a relationship with an under-age girl.

The actor refused to play out the plot and even vowed that he would never return, saying at the time: “They were very rude to me when I left.

“I would rather walk down any other street even if I had a nail in my shoe.”
