Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Bill Roache has opened up about the heartbreaking story affecting the Barlow family at the moment.

Peter Barlow has been told that because of his alcoholism, he is at a real risk of dying. An incident next week leads to him deciding that he wants to stop drinking, and he's told that he has to do it gradually rather than going cold turkey.

The Ken Barlow actor has talked about how he feels the family are coping with Peter's condition, saying: "In order to help Peter properly they have to manage his withdrawal from alcohol which means he has to have some alcohol every day and it is such a difficult situation for Ken to deal with... They are walking in a minefield.

"It is a very good storyline. I have known people in this situation. I have had friends who have been alcoholics and it is true what they say, you can't do anything until they turn round and say help me.

"Ken is trying and he can't bear that feeling of impotence of not being able to help his son and just having to sit back and do nothing until Peter accepts he needs and wants their help. He is so disappointed that Daniel's offer [of being a donor] didn't have the desired effect with Peter."

Bill also explained that we will see more of Peter treating Ken like the enemy as time goes on, and that while storylines like this can be harrowing and heartbreaking, the actor does enjoy being part of such big drama, especially when it can help viewers out.
