Creed Director Ryan Coogler Wanted For Black Panther?

It looks as though Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ is honing in on a director… as Ryan Coogler is rumoured to be eyed for the director’s chair.

According to Heroic Hollywood, the 29-year-old filmmaker is in the running to helm the upcoming ‘Black Panther’ solo movie.

“According to sources, Ryan Coogler, the HOT director of Sundance indie breakout hit Fruitvale Station (a must watch imho) is being pursued by Marvel to direct the upcoming Black Panther!”

‘Fruitvale Station’ was Coogler’s first feature-length film, and was based on the events leading up to the death of Oscar Grant – a young man who was killed in 2009 by police officers at the Fruitvale BART Station.

Considered a critical success, it currently holds a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes… so perhaps it’s easy to see why Marvel Studios would be interested in working with the young director.

Especially considering Marvel’s earlier choices…

“Selma director Ava DuVernay was originally offered Black Panther but ultimately passed. Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray was a contender until he recently decided to direct Fast 8 instead.”

But will Ryan Coogler take the job?

“This story is developing and I’m not sure how far talks have progressed, or if an offer has even been made,” they explained. “But I trust the sourcing and it looks like Coogler is now Marvel’s top contender. I’ll report back with more as I find out.”

I can’t help thinking that Ryan Coogler makes an awful lot of sense… especially considering the buzz surrounding his upcoming ‘Rocky’ sequel, ‘Creed’.

But will he land the top job? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Black Panther’ stars Chadwick Boseman as the eponymous hero with Ernie Hudson reportedly portraying the hero’s father and Andy Serkis rumoured to reprise the role of Ulysses Klaw.

‘Black Panther’ heads to cinemas on 16 February 2018.
