Bill Skarsgård's remake of The Crow has taken a big step towards premiering in cinemas.

Almost 18 months on from the gothic revenge thriller's announcement, Deadline reports that Lionsgate secured US rights to the movie in an eight-figure deal this week, with the movie expected to hit the big screen next year sometime. Filming was reported to have wrapped last year.

Rupert Sanders, whose previous credits include Ghost in the Shell and Snow White and the Huntsman, directs the long-awaited remake, while Oscar nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard) co-wrote the screenplay with Will Schneider.

Cast alongside John Wick: Chapter 4 actor Skarsgård are singer-songwriter FKA twigs, Yellowstone and Succession's Danny Huston, plus Foundation's Laura Birn.

They'll be joined by 1899 star Isabella Wei, A Son's Sami Bouajila and The Woman King's Jordan Bolger.

The story itself concerns Eric Draven, who returns from the dead to seek bloody vengeance on those who killed him and his fiancée Shelly.

Released in 1994, the original Crow starred the late Brandon Lee, who was fatally wounded by a prop gun on set.

"We appreciate what the Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology," commented Lionsgate's executive vice-president of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh.

"To work with a creative team led by Rupert's unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege."

Added the producers: "The original film left an indelible mark on our culture that lives on. We are thrilled to bring a new adaptation for today's audiences that respects this legacy.

"Rupert has masterfully brought new dimensions to create a contemporary universe for this timeless saga of undying love, and we can't wait to share this vision with film audiences."
