Gillian Anderson looks eerily like Margaret Thatcher in new set photos for The Crown season season 4.

The X-Files and Sex Education star is portraying the controversial Conservative Prime Minister, nicknamed The Iron Lady, who ran the country between 1979 and 1990.

And with the help of a padded shoulder suit and puffy barnet, the actress is the spitting image of the former leader.

The set photos are from a scene depicting the moment Thatcher addressed the press shortly before being elected in 1979.

When her casting as Thatcher was first announced, Anderson said: "I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman.

"Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era."

Fans of The Crown were recently caught off guard when it was announced that the Netflix series would end with season 5, despite the original plan for it continue beyond that.

So far there have been three seasons of the show, with the fourth instalment currently in development.

But there will only be one more chapter beyond that, with Imelda Staunton (A Confession, Harry Potter) taking over from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II for just the one season – Claire Foy and Colman (following season four) will have starred in two apiece.

The Crown is available to stream now on Netflix, while seasons 1 and 2 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
