The video begins with a shot of Dakota standing at the bottom of the staircase wearing a shirt that reads, “Wear love everywhere you go.” Dakota brushes a strand of hair from her face and looks up at her dad. Then, she points towards the top of the staircase, and asks, “Daddy can you pick me up and bring me upstairs?”

The next shot shows Jon, who is wearing a backwards baseball cap and a Nirvana t-shirt. Behind him hangs a family photo of Jon with his wife and daughter. “You’re a big girl, you can do it,” Jon tells Dakota.

“Ok daddy,” Dakota replies, looking slightly disappointed.

Dakota turns and runs up the stairs, then the shot cuts back to Jon, who suddenly looks dejected. The grin falls from his face as a caption appears on screen that reads, “Realizing one day she will never ask me to pick her up again.”

The video ends as Jon, suddenly contemplating how quickly his daughter will grow up and gain her independence, thinks about how much he’ll miss these little experiences in the future.

“Always pick them up,” a caption on the video reads.

Viewers found Jon’s video relatable and shared their own parenting memories in the comments section.

“These videos crush me like an empty can of diet sadness,” one TikToker wrote.

“My 13-year-old doesn’t want hugs anymore,” another parent lamented.

“This is why I still pick up my granddaughter even though she’s 6,” another viewer explained. “She asks, ‘Grandma, how can you still carry me?’ I reply, “It’s grandma powers!’”

While parents can’t stop their children from growing up, they can still savor all the special moments along the way!
